Village

Many former students have been abandoned and left in poverty when their families can no longer provide the support they need.

We believe that everyone deserves access to the support required to lead a happy and fulfilling life. So we plan to build Sri Lanka's first residential care facility for adults with learning disabilities, the Blue Rose Village.

In early 2022, we were incredibly thankful when Dr Athula Fernando and Mrs Thushari Hemapala donated four acres of land to kickstart the project. The land is in an idyllic location, just twenty minutes from the existing Blue Rose School and Training Centre, and forms part of an old tea plantation surrounded by beautiful green mountains and bubbling streams.

We have already broken ground thanks to additional donations from parents, teachers and volunteers. We are starting to clear the site by restoring the existing tea plantation, preparing the soil for a home garden, and securing the area with a fence. In addition, we have completed a contour survey to form a strategic plan for the structure and requirements of the village.

The Blue Rose Village will provide a safe space for our former students at risk of being inadequately supported at home by their primary caregivers or family members. It will be a home-from-home for 30 residents, with support from a dedicated team of staff members and volunteers. Like other residential care facilities, the village will consist of several purpose-built accommodation units serviced by a large central kitchen, administrative buildings and recreational facilities.

To help the residents get the most out of life, autonomy, self-determination, and confidence will be encouraged alongside privacy, dignity and self-direction. Social interaction and companionship will come hand in hand with the raft of activities designed to build the community, with recreational facilities for supervised physical activities and a communal hall for free play, dance, games and other village events.

We plan for the village to hold several markets throughout the year where people can purchase products to support the project and provide part of a sustainable funding source for the project.
